Freshman Stars in Documentary Showing in NYC

Backyard Wilderness, a documentary featuring freshman Annabel “Annie” Fabian, is now being shown at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.

Annie plays the role of Katie, the daughter in the fictional family portrayed in the 3D documentary, which was shot mostly in northern Westchester County. The award-winning film will be shown in the museum’s theater through June 30, 2019.

“Spanning a seasonal year around a suburban home, the film displays a stunning array of unique wildlife images and behavior -- all captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests, and moving along the forest floor and pond bottom, to reveal its inhabitants in rare and breathtaking intimacy,” the filmmakers’ website states. “We follow Katie … and her modern family living next to the woods who are blind to the real-life spectacle around them, absorbed by an array of electronic devices in their busy lives. Katie gradually discovers the intricate secrets that nature has hidden so close to her front door and we experience the joy she finds in her interactions with this new world.”

When asked about the film project last year, Annie said, “The acting school in my town, Croton Academy of Arts, where I have taken classes, was approached by the producers, looking for a young brunette to play Katie. I sent in a video audition, and was a finalist to audition in person, and then got the part.”

Although she has some lines, she added, most of the dialogue is in the form of voice-over narration provided by another actor portraying Katie as an adult.

The documentary has already been shown at several science centers and museums across the country, and is scheduled to be shown at several more through next spring.

The film recently won several awards at the Giant Screen Cinema Association Awards ceremony: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Film for Lifelong Learning, Best Short Subject and Best Big Idea.

Released by SK Films, Backyard Wilderness is an Arise Media/Archipelago Films production in collaboration with HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, and was created by Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmakers Andrew Young and Susan Todd, who are based in New York.
